The Photo File Name and Class Not Registered Error

Often people are faced with the “Class not Registered” error whenever they are saving or opening files as basic as Photos or Videos, etc. The error is caused by the deletion or corruption of Windows System files which handle the erroneous files’ operation in Windows, these files either affect a specific software or the whole Operating System. It has also been reported that sometimes this error is caused by conflicting software.

Fixing the Error using Unorthodox Way

Since this error is due to corruption of Critical System files, there is no simple way of fixing it manually unless you are an experienced programmer/coder. The best solution is to use automated processes like the Registry Scan, Full System File Scan and Repair command via Command Prompt.

Registry Scan

Registry scan is recommended to quickly heal your PC/aptop facing this error. Registry scanner will look for corrupted or missing registry entries that cause file name and file association errors.

Things you need to know before following the guide

Before you start troubleshooting the error, there are few things that you need to know.

  • In order to use the “System File Checker” command in Command Prompt, you must have Administrative Privileges otherwise CMD won’t allow you to run this command.
  • Since the corrupt/broken files are to be replaced, you need your Windows Installation Disk/Media with you since the guide will use it to as a source to replace the current corrupt files with new ones.

Commands that you will need

In order to fix this issue, you can use any of the two commands below and type them CMD

  1. sfc /scannow – this verifies the integrity of all system files and repairs the damaged system files by replacing them with the correct files.
  2. sfc /verifyonly – this will only check and scan if files are corrupted or not. After verification, you need to replace the corrupted files yourself.

Since the former command Verifies and Repairs files, it will take a longer time to finish compared to the latter command.

How to fix the “Class not Registered” error

  1. Go to Start Menu and click on “All Programs“.
  2. In the next window, click on “Accessories“.
  3. Here, you will see “Command Prompt“. Right click on it and click “Run as Administrator“.
  4. Alternatively, you can open “Command Prompt” using Run. Press Windows + R and in the next window, type “cmd” without the quotes.

Now, there are two ways to do it. We are going to show you both

  1. Using the sfc /scannow command
    1. Insert your Windows Installation CD into the CD ROM. If you have a bootable Windows USB, plug it to your system.
    2. Type sfc<space>/scannow in CMD and hit Enter.
    3. This will take some time as it’s a two-way process. It will first scan the corrupted files and then replace them with the new ones.
  2. Using the sfc /verifyonly
    1. Type sfc<space>/verifyonly in CMD and hit Enter.
    2. Wait till the verification process is complete.
    3. After the verification process is complete, if there are any corrupted files or a problem is occurred, open Windows\logs\CBS\cbs.log\sfcDetails.txt to see the specific files that are damaged or corrupted.
    4. After you have identified, replace them from the source files from your installation media.
  3. Note that these commands often require multiple runs to completely fix the issue, so to save time, it is recommended to restart the PC in Command Prompt or Safe Mode and run the command. Since the files are not in use, the command will be able to modify them much easily.
